Touring and Recording and Writing, Oh My

Happy Groundhog Day, folks.

I wanted to drop in and let you know a few things:

1) 2011 was a great year in many ways. It was one of my busiest, which is why I didn’t manage to blog much, either at the Rabbit Room, the Wingfeather Saga site, or this one. I hope this year is different, but I’m skeptical. Which brings me to #2.

2) I’m in the studio! I can hardly believe it’s been two years since the Captains Courageous and I flew to Washington State and recorded Counting Stars. That experience was wonderful—a ton of work in 9 days, but magical in its wintry seclusion. Rather than try to replicate something that was so rare, we decided to record this new record in Nashville, old school. But we invited producer Cason Cooley into the mix to work with Ben and Andy, and so far the results have been good. We’ve tracked 10 new songs, and will work to finish the album on our days off from the spring Songs and Stories tour. Which brings me to #3.

3) I’m on tour! I’m writing this from a coffee shop in Broken Arrow, OK (I always think of Roy D. Mercer when I’m in OK), on tour with the honorable Steven Curtis Chapman and the also honorable Josh Wilson. Tonight is our first show of the year. Check out the tour dates to see if we’re coming to your area, and please come! The shows have been delightful. Steven’s a great performer, and he bares his soul every night in a way that’s deeply moving. He and Josh and I play on each other’s songs, which is a blast. Most nights I’m playing “Dancing in the MInefields”, “World Traveler”, “Planting Trees”, “The Reckoning,” and “Many Roads”, but every now and then I call an audible. The band (which includes the great Ben Shive, along with Ken Lewis and Brent Milligan) is amazing, and if there’s ever a wrong note it’s played by me and only me. The Fall tour was such a blast, I can hardly believe we get to do it all again for the next six weeks. One good thing about a tour that I’m not headlining is that there’s time for Ben and me to duck into a coffee house and write emails, edit records, and/or work on fantasy novels. Which brings me to #4.

4) I’m dusting off my Spock ears and getting ready to dig into The Warden and the Wolf King, book four of the Wingfeather Saga. The plan is to release it in early 2013, which means I have about nine months to write the whole thing—and I’m honestly not sure that’s enough time. Knowing that this is the final book in the series ups the ante quite a bit, because I want to finish strong. So many stories fall apart in the final act, and I’m going to do my darndest to avoid that pitfall. The plan is to start on it during this tour, so that in the summer I can work on it in earnest, before the new record releases. That’s right, that’s a segue to #5.

5) The new album is supposed to release on August 21, which means we’ll be doing a release tour, hopefully with a band. That excites me terribly. More updates to come once we start booking it, but the release show will be in Nashville, probably as a part of Hutchmoot. (On to #6!)

6) Hutchmoot 2012 is being planned. I hope you can come. Last year the whole thing sold out in just a few hours and some of you guys missed a shot, so this time we’re going to do a better job of announcing it ahead of time, and we may even sell tickets in groups over the course of a few days. We’ll see. We also have some exciting releases from the Rabbit Room planned for 2012, but I can’t announce them just yet. In the meantime, I hope you’ll continue to visit the site, read the essays, and support the authors and artists there.

So it’s going to be a busy year. It goes without saying that I’m grateful beyond belief for your support and encouragement. I don’t deserve it, and that makes me even more thankful. See you on the road!

You’re in Broken Arrow, Ok. My town. I can’t come see you. And I probably even know in which coffee shop you wrote this (don’t go too far to the East, you might fall in that pond).
Nope, I can’t come see you because, well, because I’m just incapacitated enough to not be able to, but have enough sense to be able to write a bit. Dang it!
I know the show will be beautiful and exciting. I’m exceedingly sorry to miss it, because for a few years I’ve been trying to get you to BA. I’m still working on that in regard to BTLOG, and hey, you never know, it may just happen!
Seriously though, Andrew, I hope tonight goes really well, and I know you’ll rake in a lot of new-found fans. Just know I’ll be sitting in my house, not more than 5 miles from where you’ll be singing your heart out, with a regretful heart that I inadvertently scheduled the procedure I had today on the same day you would be here. :(
Best wishes to you all, and tell Ben that had I been on the ball, I wouldn’t have scheduled that procedure today, and I would have been there with gifts in hand (probably something really yummy!) for you both.
Until next time.
PS. I hope I remember that I even wrote this post! ;)

August 21st is a great day, b /c it’s my birthday :) ! ha!

All of this news makes me happy! Blessings on you as you dive into the year ahead.

Oh YAY!  Oh YAY!  Oh YAY!  Oh YAY!  Oh YAY!  Oh YAY!

I am very excited and I’m grinning ear to ear.

AND I hope you & SCC do another Songs and Stories tour or something similar in New England.  Like Portland, Maine for instance.

any word on when Go North would be released as an audiobook?

Just finished (once again) listening to the Carried Along and Clear to Venus records this morning….I can hardly wait for the new album!  You all are such an encouragement to me and to so many, many others.  Thank you for serving faithfully with music, story and testimony.

And a happy belated Groundhog Day to you, Mr. Peterson! Grace and blessings on you and your family and fellow artists as you embark on so many wonderful things! Can’t wait for the new album! Ever since I discovered your music a little over a year ago, I have been trying so hard to buy one album at a time so I can savor them! So glad another is coming! I am also becoming a rabbit room addict. Thank you for releasing such quality, thought-provoking work there.

Hi Andy. Will their be a chance that your release show of your next cd could be streamed online? I would love that! Nashville is a little far away from me. I live in Texas. Thanks.

I just got your Clear to Venus CD last week! I love it! I love the song Hosanna! My church has done it a few times. Such a great message!

All news of the goodliest sort. Wonderful.

Oh, I very much wish you were coming on tour to the SF bay area. Hey, could you maybe plan a little collaborative effort for a concert with you and Josh Garrels here? Because that would pretty much send me to the moon and back (awe heck… maybe a double round trip.) That would probably be the one concert I’d want to go to if given a chance to choose from any… and you know what? I’m including U2 in that list. They are merely runners up. So… uh… what do you say?! :^D

Happy for all these blessings!

One can dream. One must.

Wow you really spend a great time. I must that all you describe makes me feel i were with you all this. Really waiting for your new album. August 21 will be very exciting day. Good luck and blessing.

Oooh, can hardly wait for the final book…..Please…please…can you include creative footnotes like you had in the first book? :)

God bless you as you share your God-given talent with us!

Thanks for great songs. I have sung 3 of your songs in Church here, in Norway. Some easy to sing, some hard: “Serve hymn,” “High Noon”, “Carried along”. Hope for new songs. Have you heard of anyone trying to translate it to swedish or norwegian or danish ? greetings

After looking at your tour dates in 2012 I don’t see any near (or) close proximity to Wisconsin.  We enjoyed you so very much in Oshkosh two summers ago.
